Women's Carnival Day. The Thursday that opens the street carnival. Offices in the Rhineland empty around 11:11 and the custom is to cut off the ties of anyone still wearing one. Called Schmotziger Donnerstag in the Swabian-Alemannic south-west and Altweiberfastnacht in much of the Rhineland. Carnival is regional: it is strongest in the Rhineland (Cologne, Dusseldorf, Mainz), in Swabian-Alemannic form in the south-west, and as Fasching in Bavaria and Franconia. Much of northern and eastern Germany barely marks it.
