Carnival Season Opening. The carnival session opens on 11 November at 11:11 and runs until Ash Wednesday 2029. In Cologne the crowds gather on Heumarkt and Alter Markt from the morning. Carnival is regional: it is strongest in the Rhineland (Cologne, Dusseldorf, Mainz), in Swabian-Alemannic form in the south-west, and as Fasching in Bavaria and Franconia. Much of northern and eastern Germany barely marks it.
